There are many situations where routers are used, but the most prevalent example is a home networking router such as a Linksys, Netgear, D-Link or a myriad other vendors.

The main reason for using this is because your ISP (internet Service Provider) only allocates you ONE IP address. Using a router allows a large number of computers to "hide" behind that one address and use it simultaneously to access the internet. The feature that allows you to do this is NAT (Network Address Translation). This is really the main reason for using a router. Without NAT, only one computer would be able to access the internet at a time on your home Internet connection.
