Why anime is so popular?

Firstly it's unique from other countries' animations or cartoons.

Cartoons are 99% aimed for under 13 year olds. Animes are different.

Most anime shows - 98% are aimed for over 13 year olds, the other 2% are aimed for either adults or little kids. Even though the majority of anime shows are aimed for over 13 year olds, the plot, the character development and the art - make it much more realistic, interesting and worthwhile than cartoons.

Of course there are some cartoons which are worthwhile but this is only (99.9% of the time) because of the comedy. Cartoons are all about: comedy, action-superhero usually and on some cartoons romance (like scooby doo mystery Inc) however there's barely any romance in any cartoon.

Cartoons are not as imaginative or creative, they do not have as many genres as anime: Romance, Magic, School Life, Comedy, Action, Horror, Historical, Mecha, Mystery, Supernatural, Fantasy, Sports, Adventure, Slice Of Life etc.

As for cartoons:Comedy, Action, Horror, Mystery, Supernatural. These genres seem to be better suited for boys then girls.

Answer.To answer this question... let's look at the history of how anime came to be.

Japanese animation, shortened as anime, is an art form that was partly inspired by

Disney and other American animation of the 1930s. They were also influenced by earlier Japanese art and the kabuki theater. Anime is often based off of their manga, which are basically Japanese comics. Osamu Tezuka is credited to be the father of manga and anime, for he innovated the techniques and output of manga and anime. Both manga and anime became more well-known in Japan after WWII. Manga soon had a huge following in the 1970s... the term "mangaka" was coined. The 80s saw the growth of anime adaptations of the 70s and 80s manga. Though anime and manga had existed as early as the 20s, it hadn't become mainstream in Japan until the 70s and 80s. The period between the 70s and 90s marked huge changes in the style of manga and anime.

When the 90s came, most countries like America had it's first mainstream taste of what Japanese anime is like. Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and others were licensed and broadcasted on American television. They proved to be a huge hit. They are regarded as the pioneer anime in America.

Now, I'll answer the question. It is popular in many countries for different reasons according to their culture. It is said that Americans like to see violence in animation and anime can be very violent... maybe more so than any other animation style in the world.

To be personal-- I like anime because of the drama, the voice acting, the plot, the awe-inspiring action, and how it really draws you in. I like manga because of the beautiful illustrations, the story telling, and the devotion to the plot. Anime and manga range in so many genres.... mystery, psychological, romance, comedy, slice of life, crime fighting, drama, etc.

It's probably popular in America because it's totally different from typical American animation because it's not JUST comedy, and it's plot-driven... it's not day to day life or wacky episodes like The Simpsons, King Of The Hill, South Park, Family Guy, and various children's cartoons.

Anime brings something much more different to America... it brings drama and love as main genres. I know no American TV show on the top of my head that is like that. The Japanese take anime/manga a lot more seriously than Americans do-- for in America, most animes are marketed for children. Adult Swim was a pioneer in making anime more than what seems to be a cartoon... with Death Note as an example, which is clearly not a children's show.

I don't know about the rest of the world... because I live in America and never traveled. They probably like anime for the same reasons as American otaku do-- The variety of genres and how seriously it's taken.

Don't assume that ALL anime is like Pokemon, because it's definitely NOT. That is just like saying that all of American television is about football. Not all anime/manga characters has huge eyes and wild colored hair either. You have to be a worldly person to be able to appreciate Japanese animation and comics.

All types of people like anime... not just stereotyped nerds. Zach Efron is a notable anime fan. :)

Animation is popular because it connects with a huge variety of people all across the globe. It impacts people of all ages, races, genders etc. You can do so much with it. With animation there are no limits. You can have the characters express any emotion, teach, or tell a great story. You can have the characters doing incredible unrealistic things that a normal person couldn't dream of doing.

Animation will always be popular.
