They are associated with him because of the giants Agrios and Oreios, sons of Polyphonte. All were turned to birds associated with Ares: Polyphonte becoming a small owl, Oreios became an eagle owl, Argios was changed into a vulture and a unnamed female servant was turned into a woodpecker.

The mother of Polyphonte was Thrassa, a daughter of Ares and Tereine.
