Its ability to accept protons (basic property) is somewhat stronger (lower pK-value) than its proton donating property (very weak acid, higher pKa):

  • base: HCO3- + H+ ---> H2CO3 pKb=7.64
  • acid : HCO3- -> H+ + CO32- pKa=10.25

As proof of this the pH value of a pure sodium bicarbonate is just above 7: pH about 8.0
