Bondaweb is a very useful material for making applique. On one side it is made of paper and the other is like a web of glue. It will not become sticky until it is heated by an iron or a press. You can draw on the paper side whatever shape you want your applique to be ( it must be a mirror image). Then using an iron or press you can glue the bondaweb to the back of your chosen piece of fabric. Now cut around the applique shape you drew. Then peel off the paper and place the shape glue side down onto another piece of fabric. Then iron the two fabrics down so that they bond together. There is no need for pins. You now can either leave it as it is or you can sew around it. The bondaweb also helps the applique shape to fray less.
Simply, to decorate a piece of fabric. Bondaweb is a heat fusible fabric also used for hemming. Its purpose in applique is to stick the pieces on to the backing fabric. This holds them in place for permanent sewing. It's better than pins because it keeps the pieces flat.
