Why is channel 1 not HD on sky?
Channels 1 to 5 on UK terrestrial broadcasts have been allocated as BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel4 and Channel 5 respectively. These channel numbers have been accepted as the norm for decades.
When cable and satellite broadcasts were first started in the UK, providers wanted to promote their own channels by using the channel 1 slot. The regulators have instructed all broadcasters to retain the traditional numbers for the first 5 channels. Therefore, HD channels must be somewhere other than those first 5 channel numbers. No doubt, this will change in the future when HD becomes the norm for television rather than the exception.
Depending on which service you have, Sky Plus HD Box or Virgin media will dictate the channel - 511 is Sky Sports 1 and 512 is Sky Sports 2 on Virgin Media Boxes - and if you have Sky TV through the Sky Plus or Sky Plus HD set top box, you can receive Sky Sports on 401 for Sky Sports 1 and 402 for Sky Sports 2. Hope this helps, and should you need…

Yes you get over 600 channels but you have to pay for it. You can get Sky, Sky + and Sky + HD. In the adverts in Avatar Sky said they are making Sky + HD 3D. Which will be good! But you have to pay for them all. I think Sky + HD is rubbish because its expensive and you have only got a couple of the channels that are HD!
A Sky receiver will receive and record all programmes that the subscription allows. If an HD box is being used with a subscription that doesn't allow HD programming to be received, the record function will be limited to SD only. However, you can record the free HD channels as long as you have an active subscribtion to sky plus (without the HD pack)
