Classical Guitar typically refers to an acoustic instrument with nylon strings played by picking the strings with fingertips rather than a pick. Andreas Segovia was a pioneer in playing classical music on a Classical guitar. Willie Nelson's iconic Martin Guitar is also a classical guitar.

The instrument is important today because it requires a level of mastery to play that is unlike the more common pop, rock, jazz and blues styles. It is unique in tone and style, and affords both player and listener an avenue to variation and refinement in musical appreciation.

How did classical music evolve to today?

Today we don't have classical music composers. Classical music is period around XVI to XIX century, even part of XX century. It was pushed by, in one side, atonality (modern music) and popular music in the other. Now, it's possible that today's composers write in a classical way. For example, the Prokofiev's First Symphony 'Classical' or Stravinsky's Pulcinella suite. But, even, we can't talk of classical music nowdays.

When did classical music get famous?

Classical music wasn't as you know it today. Today we have multiple genres spanning the entire music scene of the world. Several centuries ago Classical music was simply music. There was no disparity between what was classical and what was not. Nearly everything of the time was classical therefore it became popular from its inception. In terms of instrumental classical music, that took off at the demise of the Baroque Period and beginning of the Classical period. Rising middle-class wages allowed for a wider range of audience in virtuoso performances and public orchestras. Music was a sign of prestige and therefore those who could not perform at least attended. It was one of the primary sources of entertainment besides plays. Popularity for classical music has dwindled since the 19th century. And there is little hope it will be revived through the few neo-classical artists remaining.

When was the classical music period?

The word 'classical', when applied to music, has two different meanings, a narrow one and a much broader one. In the narrow sense of the word the classical period in music extended roughly from the middle of the eighteenth century to the early nineteenth century. Classical music in the broader sense of the expression includes the 'serious music' or 'art music' of the last four centuries (or perhaps longer), continuing today.
