It is not a taboo subject, look at newspapers and movie headlines. However, a death in the family is all too often an extremely touchy subject. It is or was, almost never used in the context of situation comedy. Characters are written out scripts by having them move to different locations, this was done quite often , no Hearses in front of the house. On the other hand there are (black) comedies which will exploit the Grim Reaper angle into a comedy affair but they are and were rare. and why not- celebrate Life!
