Many times, discovering characters motivations is the whole point of the work. When we know why characters behave the way they do, it changes the way we perceive the characters. We may disagree with the charactres' actions, but if we understand the reasons behind the actions, we may become sympathetic to them.

Understanding a character's motivation in literature is important because it helps readers to connect with and relate to the character on a deeper level. It provides insight into why the character behaves in a certain way and adds complexity to their actions, making them more believable and multidimensional. This understanding also enhances the overall meaning and impact of the story.

A character's motivating factors, as well as her reactions to events, drive the plot of a story or novel forward. The character takes action to achieve certain goals, then must react to the results of those actions. In this way, the interplay between character and plot weaves the structure of the story and allows it to progress in a believable, organic way.

For example, Holden Caulfield, in J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, is motivated by the idea of "fitting in" somewhere, belonging to a group and being valued for who he is. During his disorganized 3-day stay in New York City, he encounters almost two dozen people as he tries to connect with humanity after the death of his younger brother. He fails to truly communicate with anyone except his 7-year-old sister, who is too young to

help him. His frantic search for human contact not only forms the structure of the entire novel but guides Holden to reveal his true feelings of guilt, despair and desperation.
