Doris Buchanan Smith attended Bass High School in Atlanta, Georgia, and South Georgia College in Douglas, Georgia (1952-53). She met future husband, R. Carroll Smith in college. Neither of them completed school. Doris Buchanan Smith wrote 17 books for young readers before her death in 2002. A Taste of Blackberries remains her best-known, and it has not been out of print since 1973. The Georgia Center for the Book has named it one of the "25 Books All Young Georgian's Should Read." The first modern writer to tackle the difficult theme of the death of a playmate in a children's book, Smith won the 1974 Georgia Children's Book Award (http://gcbac.com/), and was a 1974 Newbery Medal finalist.
