There are many reason why Ethnic Studies programs are important. I can answer this question from the perspective of the United States best, and I am assuming you are asking about Ethnic Studies from the United States. I am sure you have many times heard that this country is a country of immigrants. The United States has a rich, important and crucial history that cannot be and is not thoroughly taught through basic, and general classes and such U.S. history. Most importantly most U.S. history courses ignore the story of the "other" and provide a very skewed and narrow look at the history of this country. Ethnic Studies as opposed to other traditional disciplines such as as Sociology, Anthropology and History, educates from the perspective of the oppressed, from the point-of-view of people of color(Native American's, Latinos, African American's etc.). Traditional disciplines tend to be inherently eurocentric and anglocized, ignoring the true histories, stories, and triumphs of racialized people in the U.S. Currently there is a controversial debate brought up by the extremely racist, prejudiced, and xenophobic climate that has always existed, but regained stregth due to the debate on Immigration reform. Everyones history is fundamental to the understanding of human development, simply put this is why Ethnic Studies is important; a nation that ignores, rids itself of history due to hate and bigotry is knowingly educating a nation ignorant people. If this question is at all in regards to what is happening Arizona currently, I hope you remember to always question everything! What lawmakers are trying to say is that what students learn in Ethnic Studies classes is "Anti-American," but what they are really doing is limiting the knowledge produced by those who they believe are inferior . Have you ever wondered why internationally people abroad think very little of "American's," they continually call anyone and thing associated with the United States ignorant and stupid, well this is precisely why. Remember that history is written by the winner, but there is always another side to the story, so when you have a chance, take an Ethnic Studies class.
