Fat is necessary because when you are starving or very hungry (Say trapped someplace with no food) Your body begins to digest the fats it has in store. Once it runs out of fats, it'll begin taking protein and from the muscles and calcium from the bones. That is also why you get thin and weak if you don't eat, your body is eating itself.

Before answering this question we need to understand a one aspect about fats. There are two kinds of fats: healthy fatsand damaged fats.

"Healthy fats include olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, coconuts, and the fats that come from naturally raised animals, including wild fish and grass-fed beef.

Healthy fats provide your body with the nutrients it needs to build cell membranes, absorb vitamins, cushion vital organs, protect you from extreme temperatures, build hormones, lower inflammation, and make up 70 percent of your brain tissue." (Hardick 16)

Damaged fats are fats that have been altered or denatured in the extraction process. Some examples are trans fats (hydrogenated oil), vegetable oil, and canola oil.

"Since your body cannot recognize or metabolize these fats, they naturally contribute to weight gain by clinging to cell membranes and preventing cellular detoxification...these damaged fats also adhere to arterial walls, cause inflammation and damage, and contribute to heart attacks and stroke." (Hardick 16)

As you can see, there is a great need of fat in our bodies to help maintain our everyday health, but if we fill that fat need with the wrong kinds of fats, our bodies will struggle against it and make us sick.

Do you need a certain number of fat cells to maintain life?

You can not survive without some fat in your body. You have only 300 grams of glycogen in your body. You need to get energy from the fat from the fat cells in your body. You can not get continuous supply of food material from the gastrointestinal system. But then to carry the load of fat is ridiculous.
