Though you can't consciously see it, conventional fluorescent lighting are actually very fast strobing lights, cycling on and off 60 times every second. This results in the eyes making more minute adjustments than with incandescent fixtures which provide a steady burning filament light. These minute adjustments cause the eyes to tire out and can cause eye strain. There are some newer fluorescent fixtures that cycle thousands of times per second and are much easier on the eyes. However, these newer fluorescents are waaaay expensive and I am willing to bet cash money that most people reading this have never seen one.

To determine which one is more suitable for your lighting needs, consider the specific area you want to light and whether you need focused or ambient lighting.
