fluorescent isnt always the best lighting to use a workstation because it produces UV radiation which isnt good for your eye sight

Why is flouresent lighting not always considered the most suitable lighting around a workstation?
Though you can't consciously see it, conventional fluorescent lighting are actually very fast strobing lights, cycling on and off 60 times every second. This results in the eyes making more minute adjustments than with incandescent fixtures which provide a steady burning filament light. These minute adjustments cause the eyes to tire out and can cause eye strain. There are some newer fluorescent fixtures that cycle thousands of times per second and are much easier on the eyes. However, these newer fluorescents are waaaay expensive and I am willing to bet cash money that most people reading this have never seen one.

Florescent lighting uses a ballast to create a changing electrical current that moves through the bulb and "excites" the gas held within which produces light. Because the ballast creates the changing electrical current, a changing electrical field is created. When that chancing electrical field comes in contact with the circuitry of a computer that field interferes with the signals the computer relies on for accurate calculations. The interference (known as EMI, Electromagnetic Interference) can cause any number of odd issues and can be very difficult to diagnose. Many newer fluorescent lights have better shielding to reduce the size of the EMI field the ballast emits... also, newer electronics are typically better shielded than their older counterparts which enables them to ground out (nullify) some of the EMI fields that come in contact with the unit.
