Freedom of speech is always a good thing. One cornerstone of America's foundation is that in this country, at least, the people have the right to tell the truth, and to hear it. What some may DO with their free speech is not always good, and may in fact be very bad. We have laws to deal with the abuse of free speech, and with the abuse of any freedom. Granted, they are not as effective as rounding truth-tellers up and jailing them, as our Chinese business partners prefer to do. Here, dangerous truths and hateful lies are told in public. America's foundation is an Enlightenment structure, and our Founders agreed with Blackstone: It is better that ten guilty persons escape than one innocent suffer. We allow media superstar millionaires like Glenn Beck to incite stupid poor people to violence because shutting liars like him down could only cause any honest reporters to suffer.

Dictatorships, in comparison, always try to restrict speech, so that no opposition to their rule can even be expressed.
