Pickett led his division in a frontal attack, across open ground, and then uphill against a well fortified, supplied, and motivated defensive force. He lost over half his command before they made contact with the enemy. After their repulse, when ordered to form his division for a possible counterattack, he reportedly replied, "What division? I have no division left."

The suicidal charge of Pickett's division on the third day of Gettysburg was the turning point of the battle, and a turning point of the war. Had the charge suceeded, the outcome of the war might have been different. Great Britain and France might have recognized the Confederacy and perhaps even enterered the war on the Confederate side, but the failure of the Pickett's Charge ended this prospect.
