Well they are rated M because there is blood and language in the game and sometimes gore. It is usually referred to as a "tame" M game because you are not killing people but protecting the earth. But really it depends what halo you are talking about because in halo 1 blood can be easily turned off. If your trying to convince your parents to let you get the game just tell them it is no more violent than Star Wars,as for the language it's usually just stuff like damn.
EDIT BY OTHER USER: I think it should have been rated T to be honest. It's no more violent then Goldeneye 007, And certainly is not gory, I honestly dont even know why they said gore. It is also a very fun multiplayer game, honestly the best multiplayer value I've seen out of an FPS game. Because of this, I hate how the ESRB rating team rated it M, because then early teens probably wont be allowed to play much of the Halo series, when it's barely Explicit at all, not at all M level!
