because its nice

Morality is pragmatic, it is designed to make human society work better. If we are willing to help others, then others will be willing to help us. We can choose to be friends or to be enemies. If we were all enemies, then human existence would consist of nothing but conflict, and life would be (in the words of Thomas Hobbs) nasty, brutish, and short. When human beings are able to cooperate with each other and help each other, then we are capable of creating a functional society in which we all live better and happier lives.

Of course, these theoretical advantages are not always obtained in practice. It is possible to help people who will never help you in return, and possibly will never even help anyone, because they are utterly selfish, narcissistic individuals. A benevolent society that believes in helping people will suffer from a certain amount of parasitism. There are those who are happy to take advantage of the kindness of others, without feeling any obligation to be kind in return. That is a flaw in the system. It is still possible to be helpful to other people. But there are some particular people who will prove that they do not deserve to be helped, so some discrimination is required. Even so, the basic idea remains valid, that when people help others they are thereby helping to create a more functional society in which they themselves, and everyone else, will have a better life.

There are also many religious arguments that can be made, to support the idea that it is morally right to help others. The Golden Rule, which has been stated both by Jesus (in the Sermon on the Mount) and by Gautama Siddhartha (and is therefore part of two different religions) instructs people to help others. Religious arguments and pragmatic arguments are perfectly consistent; we are not obligated to choose only one or the other, since both are valid and they do not contradict each other.
