The discovery of Pompeii is important to us because the ruins give us insight into the everyday life of the average Roman, not just the elite that the ancient writers mention. In addition to the types of businesses, types of houses, and types of decorations, we also get insight as to the health of the ancient citizens. Analysis of the teeth of the victims gives us an indication of the general health of the people and also in some cases, where the people originated. Analysis of the sewers and latrines also contribute to our understanding of the diets of the people. Reading the graffiti on the walls gives us an indication of the education of the average person. Just about all that is discovered and studied in Pompeii is important to both historians and the curious.
