Because Kshatriya society's doctrine held honour, respect and pride above life. Kshatriya like all warriors valued their life very little. With all the gore and bloodshed they would see from an early age( fighting for the homeland ), death was not a strange surprise but a usual happening. Hence, their sensation for death would grow numb during the course of their life. With the constant admiration and odes by the glorifying bards of ancient India, they started to hold their honour and pride with great regards. Much like the European knights and Japanese Samurai, but with an even more stricter code the ideal Kshatriya led a life of character and Kartavya Nishthaa ( devotion to his profession ). Hence, for such a person infamy would raise questions about his character, honour and Kartavya Nisthaa. Hence, the old adage that "Infamy is worse than death for a Kshatriya".
