It is now considered that all species of sharks play an important role in the ecology of the oceans. Due to over hunting, certain shark species were reduced and could have become extinct. The need for shark conservation has brought about laws against wanton slaughter in certain areas. Shark fin soup is made from the fins of sharks, who are then thrown back into the sea, often still alive!
