Why is it believed that the world will end in 2012 i know that's when the Mayans calendar ended but is there any other supporting proof?

People believe that the world will end on twenty first December 2012 because the Mayan calendar stops but it docent it just goes to a new b'ak'tun
The Maya record the date using the long count calendar:
B'ak'tun/k'atun/tun/winal/k'in
K'in = 1 day
Winal = 20 days
Tun = 360 days
K'atun = 20 years
B'ak'tun = 144,000 days or about 394.26 years
And December twenty first twenty twelve is
13/0/0/0/0
So all December twenty first twenty Twelve is exactly 13 b'ak'tuns since what the Maya call the last creation (meaning that the gods screwed up the first three and on august the eleventh 3114 BC thay restarted) and the last time it went over to the next b'ak'tun was on September 18th 1618 and nothing happened and in fact other than it going to a new b'ak'tun september 18th 1618 was a very quiet day in history.

And one day some of our explorers found a calendar made by the Mayans that ended in the end of year 2012.
