The words antisemitism and antisemite were coined in the late 19th century to replace the older German word "judenhass" which means "hatred of Jews." The idea was to create a modern scientific-sounding term that could be used in polite society and was in line with the then-current ideas of scientific racism. The man who coined the word was himself a proud antisemite. The entire idea of the coinage shifted the discussion from opposing Judaism as a religion to opposing Jews as a race. It is very clear that right-wing antisemites today continue to define Jews as a race, exactly in line with the original intent of this term.
