It is difficult for most plants to take minerals or water from salty solutions because just like we as human beings cant drink salty water or even if in some cases we do, we die after that. In the same way plants need freshwater like we do because both of us are living organisms.

Why does a plant in a strong salty solution die?

Because the plant loses water through osmosis. osmosis is the movement of fluids from an area of high water concentration (there are lots of water molecules) to an area of low water concentration (there are fewer water molecules). this means that because there is more water in the plant than in the solution the plant will lose its water into the solution via osmosis. the plant now has much less water than it needs to survive so will die in the same manner as a plant which has not been watered.

Why plants can't grow in salty water?

Salty water affects how a plant gets nutrients from the water and soil. Salty water causes the roots to die because the water moves outside of the plant cells as a way of balancing the salt concentration. Water stress kills plants and high levels of salt force a plant to use more energy to get needed water.
