The main reason why Japanese is quite difficult to read and write is because there are literally thousands of characters that must be memorised in order for one to be called fluent. There are approximately 3,000 characters that are necessary for everyday life in Japan.Personally, I believe the hardest part of Japanese is the fact that there are two different readings for each character: onyomi and kunyomi. Onyomi is the pronunciation which mimics the sound taken from Chinese, while kunyomi is the 'Japanese' pronunciation. I personally find onyomi to be harder, as this is the pronunciation which is mostly used when two or more characters or used together to create a word. The problem with this is that there are countless different pronunciations that are possible. This means that there are many different ways to read different character combinations.
