I once picked a century of the Middle Ages to see if I could find a year with no war going on in Europe. What I found was that some wars were easy to get information on, and some have nearly been lost to history. There many even have been medieval wars that had many men dying for causes dear to them, which nevertheless have been completely forgotten. But there were always wars.
For many people, there was no alternative but the Church in which they were raised.
