Generally, having more surface area is harmful to an organism. When single-celled organisms get too large their processes cannot satisfy the needs of their entire body. The same goes for when a human being becomes obese. While there are many other health affects of obesity, being larger means that the body has to work much harder to do normal things. A lot of times the vital organs and necessary body processes can not meet the needs of the body so it shuts down.

What happens when the size of body of organism increases and the body design becomes more complex?

Because the more complex an organism become the more surface area to volume ratio. This means that unlike simple organism(like insects) who rely on diffusion for transport of oxygen and nutrients is readily available due to their excellent surface area to volume ratio. However if an organism has a bad surface area to volume ratio(larger organisms) they require a more efficient flow of oxygen and nutrients throughout their body.

Why does crushing a solid increase the speed at which the solid dissolves?

ALL reactions (apart from Nuclear) take place on the surface. By crushing the solid you are increasing the surface area and also the SA/Volume ratio. This increased surface area increases the area available for the dissolution reaction.

What is area to volume in biology?

The ratio of surface area of an organism or cell to its volume is an important biological measure. This is because most interactions between the organism and the rest of the world happen at the its surface. So a bigger surface allows the interaction to happen more easily and therefore, usually, faster. The reactions could be chemical - taking oxygen into blood cells, transmitting it to muscle cells, collecting waste from cells, and so on. Or they could be physical - heat loss or gain.

How does surface area affect collision rate?

Surface area affects collision rate because the larger the surface area the more air resistance is acting on it, therefor a larger surface area can slow down collision rate.

Which will dissolve faster a substance with little surface area or the one with a large surface area?

One with a large surface area because the solvent will be able to dissolve more solute simultaneously.

How is a cell's potential growth affected by its ration of surface area to volume?

Volume grows exponentially in relation to surface area as both expand to allow an organism to grow. As such, because it takes more mass to fill the surface area, growth slows down at larger sizes.

How does surface area affect friction?

more rough surface more friction object have

Why does powdered sugar have more surface area?

More than what? The surface area is directly proportional with the dimensions of the particles.

Why is the inner surface of brain so crenulated?

More surface area for more neurons.

How does the large surface area of the leaf help it to make food more efficiently?

the bigger the leaf the more surface area, the more surface area the more food from the sunlight. think about things your brain is capable of figuring things out if you give it the chance

What increases the surface area of this part of the brain?

The folds in the brain increase the surface area. It nearly triples the surface area. As we grow, more of these bends form.

Why does crushing help a solid solute dissolve?

The rate of dissolution of a solid is dependent on the surface area reaction. By crushing the cube, the surface area is greatly increased, thus increasing the rate of dissolution.

the larger the surface area you have, to more heat that you are going to lose.

Which has more surface area a rectangular prisms or rectangular pyramid?

For the same base dimensions (base area) and the same height, the rectangular prism has more surface area.
