Why is it hard for a car to go straight into Top Gear?

It is hard for a car to go straight into top gear for the same reason as it is to start riding a bike from a dead stop in seventh speed, third sprocket. It's just too much tension, but it would be easy if you swithched while in motion because once moving, your engine merely has to turn wheels that are already turning.
