For anyone who grew up with the 26-letter alphabet, any writing system that is not alphabetic looks complex. But imagine if you had never known about an alphabet and the hieroglyphic system was all there was - you would learn it, gradually, just like young Japanese people learn to write Japanese or anyone learns to play the piano or a violin; those things are no more complicated than hieroglyphs.

For the ancient Egyptians, their writing system was seen as special, sacred and full of tradition which it would have been unthinkable to change.

Only a very few people ever learned to read and write hieroglyphs; they were people with status and power, people with the responsibility of preserving the writing system. That it survived for over 3,500 years is a testament to its importance.

Because there were much more than 26 and they were all little pictures.

There was about 200 or so

Also, I want to add something to the previous answer. Think of the hieroglyphics as a foreign language, and you are attempting to learn that foreign language. Well, to someone who speaks that foreign language would find reading and speaking it easy. However, you, who speaks another language would find the foreign language difficult, but your language much easier. So, I think that's how it could be for hieroglyphics. If there were Ancient Egyptians around today whose written communication was in hieroglyphics, they would find languages like English to be difficult for them. So, all in all, it depends on your point of view. Does that make sense? I hope what I wrote has helped you! :)

They were hard to read because no one could transalate them except for those who went to school in ancient Egypt. It made a parent very proud if the child could read.

Because the words, letters and numbers are pictures so it is hard to understand what they might mean.
