The cell membrane is made up of proteins and a phospholipid bilayer with semipermeability (selectively permeable membrane), a membrane that will allow certain molecules to pass through by diffusion or facilitated diffusion- some molecules need a transport protein to get across the membrane. Large molecules, cations, and anions (charged molecules) cannot get across by themselves. They will need a passive (without ATP) or facilitated (with ATP) transport in order to get across.
