This is important because any movement of the patient will make a false reading inside the AED. The machine is actually looking for a particular rhythm while the pads are connected to the chest. What it is seeing is very much alike to what is seen on an EKG. The AED will only shock if there are 2 rhythms present: Ventricular Fibrillation, or the quivering of the heart before it actually stops; and ventricular tachycardia which is defined as over 180 beats per minute.

Defibrillators, the instrument used to shock the heart, can deliver up to 360 joules of energy which is used to return a patient's heart to normal rhythm. If a person is touching the patient when the shock is delivered the current can pass from the patient to that person. The shock you would receive from touching a patient who is being defibrillated would most likely not be not be lethal, just very uncomfortable. However, electrical shock can be harmful if you have a heart problem or an implantable pacemaker as currents of as little as 10 micro amps can cause the heart to stop beating normally.

It's important to stand clear because touch can cause the defibrillator to misread a critical analysis of the patient's heart rhythm or electrical impulses. When the defibrillator actually shocks the patient, and you are touching the patient as well, you may also receive the shock which can in turn, possibly stop your heart. At the very least, you're going to feel an intense amount of pain. Bottom line, when it tells you not to touch the patient... just don't touch the patient.

Because the shock will probably go into the person touching the patient when the shock is delivered, causing another medical emergency.
