Why is it important to teach students to respect copyright and ethical uses of technology?

Because technology makes copyright infringement so easy, many people don't realize when they're doing it, and are very surprised when the lawyers start knocking on the door. As we move toward entirely digital media, it becomes less intuitive to understand when you are "copying" something--you might innately understand that retyping a long passage out of a book isn't right, but posting someone else's blog on your own doesn't seem that bad, even though they're essentially the same idea.
It becomes an ethical issue because infringement is so pervasive that there's no way for rightsholders or law enforcement to identify everyone who's infringing; that is, the threat of getting caught holds no sway. Students need to understand the reason behind copyright--to protect the rights of creators, and allow them to derive value from their creations--so they have a reason to respect it even if they know they won't get in trouble if they don't.
