The air inside of the metal makes the gas for the crucible go down and the mass changes in a way that is similar to a dog when he eats very hot grass on a very warm summer day (150 degree gas; 100 degree day). How do you determine what? If you are asking how do you measure the voltage between Hot and Neutral, I suggest a voltmeter. If you are asking how do you differentiate between Hot and Neutral in home wiring, the Hot is Black and Neutral is White.
