Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly known as the "Mormon" church) believe that it was given that name by Jesus Christ in revelation to Joseph Smith. This revelation is now contained in the Doctrine & Covenants section 115. It says "For thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." This revelation was given in 1838. For the eight years prior to this that the church was in existence, it had been known as "The Church of Christ."

The official name of the Church is very important to most of it's members. The name means that this is the Church of Jesus Christ - it is a Christian Church operated directly by Jesus Christ and founded on His teachings and commandments. It also means that it's members should be living as "Latter-day Saints" or, as literal Saints who are living in the Last Days.
