The Japanese used to sleep on mats filled with cotton. They also used their mats for sofas. They called their quilts futons. The Japanese who had futons would use their futons as backs for their sofas. When night came they would lay the quilt over the mat and it would become a futon bed. or a bed with a quilt on it. In the United States, we do not put the back on top of the mat but put it down beside the mat. It still serves as a sofa in the daytime.
