Plants generate their own energy by reacting carbon dioxide and water with sunlight to produce sugar and oxygen (photosynthesis). They get other nutrients from the soil through their roots. Because they obtain everything they need through these means they don't need to consume any food.

Plants have a different way of obtaining nutrients than animals. They are able to produce food through photosynthesis. They absorb nutrients from the soil through their roots and transport them throughout the plant. As a result, they do not require a digestive system like animals do.
