OpinionIn my experience, Jesus is almost universally respected, even among those who do not believe that he was divine. Even among followers of other religions, the moral teachings attributed to Jesus are considered as at least equal to their own.

There are some who find the Old Testament image of God disturbing, even terrible. These are generally Christians, who want their God to be a loving and kind God, as mainly described in the New Testament. This paradox, on the one hand an angry and vengeful God of the Old Testament, and on the other, a loving and kind God of the New Testament, led many early Gnostic Christians to believe that there must be two different Gods. Today, most Christians accept the Old Testament image of God, because modern Christian teaching is that the Old Testament God and the New Testament God are the same. God can not be 'terrible'.

There are others who do not believe that God is real. They either believe that Jesus was at most a holy preacher, but not divine, or even that he was not really a historical person. However, this is a different issue and does not imply that they are 'terrible'.
