Short Answer: Because it takes power from the engine to operate the A/C compressor. More detailed answer: Under a given load, an engine will operate at a given speed when a certain amount of fuel is provided. If you don't increase the fuel, but you increase the load (by turning on the A/C compressor), something has to give, and the engine operates a bit more slowly. Therefore, you would have to press on the gas just a tiny bit more to get the engine to operate at the same speed, which necessarily means you're using a bit more fuel.

How do I disconnect the horn on my 2000 Dodge Stratus? Everytime I turn the wheel, as of last evening, it goes off!
Condensation.
if you turn the selector switch of your aircon and only fan is working and no cold air coming out of the diffuser have your aircon fuse connected to the compressor check. If the fuse is not blown then have your thermostat be set to colder position. If the compressor still does not work have the thermostat be check by an auto aircon tech. If the thermostat is ok then look for any sign of oil in the piping of your aircon system possibly there is leak which causes the pressure switch not to function. If theres no refrigerant in the system the compressor will not be activated by the pressure switch.
