The significance is that the Jewish patriarch Jacob prophesied (Genesis ch.49) that "the scepter shall never depart from Judah." Once King David (who was from Judah) was anointed, none of the other tribes of Israel had permission to set up a dynasty; and no prophet allowed it. The rule of Yeravam (Jeroboam, who was not from Judah) was supposed to be a governorship, subservient to Judah at least nominally. When Jeroboam closed the border with Judah and instituted a full dynasty, he was abrogating the limited authority which God had granted him. For this reason, his Israelite dynasty and those which followed (the seven which you mentioned in your question) - were not allowed by God to enjoy lengthy existence.

The tribe of Judah, on the other hand, remained more loyal to God's command and they never instated a king from outside the lineage of David.

The significance for the future is that the Jewish people continue to await the time when God will return to them the Davidic dynasty.
