Because The Roman Catholic Church Canonized him after he lived a demonstrably Faith-filled life by the standards in use back then, and after several (usually 3 these days) Miracles were attributed to him, either during his life or after his death, and could be attributed to John as a result of prayers to him for his intercession on behalf of the prayerful petitioner with God, resulting in a marked answer/ie: a miracle.

∙ 15y agoIt was St. Teresa of Avila who persuaded John to join the Carmelites and become the spiritual director of the nuns. St. Teresa had experienced a call to form a male branch of the Discalced (reformed) Carmelites. It is notable that St. John did not place much value on mystical experiences. He is famous for his writings on "The Dark Night of The Soul", during which the soul cannot "feel" the presence of God; he postulates that the less one "experiences" God, the more God is truly present in his essence of quietness.
