Why do parents care less about their adult children when they turn 18?

We don t love you any less but you have a responsibility to care of yourself. As parents we would hurt you if you paid your debts, supported you etc without letting you fight your own battles. That is growing up. Do not mistake caring for a child for caring for an adult. You are supposed to be like us now and we will get old and frail and need you to be the stronger one. That is how we raised you. And we still treat you as kids at 18, most of us, and do not expect everything from you quiet yet, we are waiting for getting a job, graduating from college etc.

∙ 7y agoThat is not true. The majority of parents care about their children throughout their entire lives. They are just no longer legally responsible for them when the child turns 18. They become legally adults, and they are usually able to make their own decisions.

∙ 9y agoMost parents always care about their children, regardless of their age. Once the child reaches the age of 18 they are considered an adult. They are responsible for their own welfare.

If children had a legal obligation towards their parents after adulthood they would be responsible for the care of their parents in much the same way that a parent is legally responsible for the care of their children. This would legalize the assumption that adult children should look after parents. In the United Kingdom the Elizabethan Poor Law made parents and children legally responsible for each other from 1601 until 1967: now no such law exists. Proponents would argue that it is important children provide for their elders, particularly in times when the provision of state pensions is becoming less economically viable, however opponents may question a society and a parent-child relationship that needs a law in place to enforce an obligation that should be a moral and not legal issue.like.. ♥
