First of all, terminal has many definitions and this one specifically does not mean an end to life, for ex.. It was the end stop for that plane when it arrived to the airport.
It is also the extremity of the gate, where they station (park) the planes to load and unload passengers as well as their luggage. Terminal gate was when this airplane made its last stop, meaning it will not go anywhere until its next trip.
If you study the way an airport is built, you can see why they have the extremities (like roots of a tree) in order to park these planes giving them enough space between each other in order for other transportation to move around as well as giving them space to move in and out of the gates.. So they call this place gates or terminal, but only means the last stop for the plane, until it leaves the airport.
