Why is it too simplistic to blame the fall of Rome on one issue?

Some Romans blamed the fall of the Roman Empire on Roman decadence. They thought that the Romans had lost their hardiness and ability and willingness to fight. They attributed this to opulence and corruption on the one hand and to the softness of Christianity which had become the religion of the majority of the Romans on the other hand. The Germanic peoples defeated a Roman people which had become weak. This view was based on the long established stereotype the Romans held about themselves of toughness, moral rectitude, tenacious fighting spirit which would have them as fighting to the bitter end in the pursuit of victory, and as a victorious people. The actual reality, of course, was far more complicated that that.
