Lead sinkers are used to keep the bait anchored to the bottom of the water body. The sinkers come in many different shapes and sizes for different fishing situations. Lead is used because it has a high density and low cost. Some competitive anglers are using tungsten weights which have a higher density (and therefore a lower profile) but they are significantly more expensive. Tungsten is also better for the environment,.

Because lead is so dense - and reasonably resistant to corrosion it can make a good anchor because it takes up less space than less dense materials and won't corrode much.

It is a dense metal which means the weights do not have to be very large. Also, it is resistant to corrosion. Finally, lumps of lead are not particularly valuable so not worth stealing!

Why is lead Pb used for fishing sinkers?

It's heavy and cheap. It's also soft enough that you can pinch it around the line easily. When I was a kid, you got split-shot sinkers and attached them to the line by putting the sinker in the split then biting it--yes, with your teeth. We were all a little dumber then.

What is a tungsten fishing sinker?

Tungsten is an ideal substitute of the lead fishing sinker. It's strong adhesive, semi-solid state, soft for a long term. Tungsten Heavy Alloys concentrate maximum weight in the smallest possible space. They are more often to be used as counterweight in sporting field, such as fishing sinkers, golf weights, etc. Tungsten weights are an ideal, environmentally friendly alternative to lead weights, which are toxic and increasingly being labeled an environmental hazard. They are harder than steel and extremely dense, tungsten being on average 30 percent smaller than its lead counterpart. Meanwhile, they are smaller than conventional weights, create twice the sound of lead weights and maintain their shape for longer. Tungsten is also used in the production of other fishing applications, such as tungsten-carbide line cutters and tungsten powder coating for fishing lines.
