they're used to find places within an area, like a map for example. so the longitude is used to find how far along the horizontal axis the location is and the latitude is used to find out how far along the verticle axis the location is so with the longitude and latidude co-ordinates you can find a particular location.

It's not important at all, and you can live your entire life very well without ever

using it or understanding it. It's just that if you ever want to discuss locations

on Earth with other people, you'll quickly discover that the system of latitude

and longitude is the fastest, easiest, and best understood way to do that.
