According to the people who believe in God's Creation, it is because God looks like a man and so therefore, since God is perfect, man is required to be perfect as well and everything else is inferior (making us "God's masterpiece"). Others say that Woman, being last created by God, that God left His greatest masterpiece 'til last.
On the other hand, according to the people who accept evolution, man isn't a Masterpiece. He would just be a stepping stone on the way to becoming something quite different again - something that may be better (or may be worse - we have no clue).

If we were the masterpiece of God's creation, we would be at peace with each other, rather than persecuting those with whom we disagree, and fighting endless wars.
