Diseases caused by viruses cannot necessarily be cured. Advances in research has given the medical community hope that a viral treatment is on the horizon in at least a couple of decades. HIV and AIDS research has seen tremendous improvements in treating those viral diseases. The person who can cure the common cold and viral flu will become a multi-billionaire.
Many diseases do not have cures any where in the world yet. So physicians are forced to tread the symptoms. It is costly to look for a cure and can take many decades so some diseases have not even been researched for cures because the disease is not fatal and can be managed by treating the symptoms.
Seriously contagious diseases are targeted first and then the most fatal diseases are targets for medications to cure or at least arrest the contagion or deadly disease.
In the United States the Food and Drug Administration is more "symptom treatment" focused than cure focused. In Sweden they are more aggressive in looking for cures and creating medications that actually treat the disease rather than the symptoms. Each country has their own thinking on how to manage medication development and research.
