There is a vacuum leak in the engine. When there is not enough pressure in the air system the car will not idle correctly. This can cause a slow idle, erratic idle, or even a surging idle. Check the vacuum lines and intake for any leaks.
You can find a diagram of an intake manifold for a Kia Sportage at major auto parts stores. You can also find it in repair books at the library.
if it is the intake manifold YES, exhaust manifold NO.
On the front end of the intake manifold.
If not mistaken, it is on the right handside of the motor below the the intake manifold.

in the middle, under the air intake manifold there is a black piece of plastic and the plugs are under there, the inlet manifold has to be removed as well...
first install new carb gasket to intake manifold and then 4 nuts hold the carb to the intake studs and then install the throttle linkage to the carb.
In my sportage I had to remove the intake manifold off to get at them (all 4) home it helps.
