You need to be more specific in your question. What year/make/model and engine size/configuration do you have? If you dont know this then just take it in. Does it knock at idle? Hard acceloration? Decceloration? Only when cold? Only when hot? Info like this is very valuable when trying to diagnose a problem, but i would first look at your rotating assembly. (aka crankshaft, rods, and pistons) One or more bearing may have excessive clearance, the wrist pins may be scored, etc. The easiest way too look at it is to take off the oil pan and visually inspect everything.
Could be many reasons,
High mileage (worn out bearings),
Poor or no maintenance (oil & filter changes),
Abuse,
Could also be a spark knock (pinging),
Excessive piston cleareance(worn, piston slap)/cracked piston skirt can cause a knock noise.
All of which are signs of major damage/repairs needed or potential damage if left unchecked.
knocking noise
engine knocking hard, and shaking a bit
NO. A knocking noise in the engine is a problem in the engine.
Engine knocking can be caused by numerous things. Having the incorrect spark plugs, carbon deposits on the cylinder walls, and being low on engine oil may all cause a knocking sound.
if your engine is knocking that means you need oil. go get an oil change or add a quart asap or the engine will burn out
Detonation involves a supersonic exothermic. Knocking in a engine is spark-ignition internal combustion.
if the engine is knocking really loud you probably need to overhaul the entire engine or get a new or used engine because loud knocking is not good
When the fuel in an engine cylinder ignites prematurely or unevenly to cause power fluctuations and a "knocking" sound. usually occurs when an engine is very how or improperly timed.
your foot
When your engine has a knocking noise, it could mean that a rod has been thrown. It could also mean you are low on oil.
Knocking is usually associated with worn main and rod bearings.
Pre-ignition in an engine may be detected by engine knocking.
