Because if it wasn't the atmosphere would be more flammible. If there was no nitrogen or other unfammable gas in the air a single spark would blow up the planet. Also nitrogen doubles as being necissary for most forms of life. Nitrogen also helps sea-level's pressure be exactly that, sea-level's pressure.
